House of the Sea, Sharks in the Flak Tower

House of the Sea, Sharks in the Flak Tower

In the middle of Mariahilf, a grey concrete giant rises from the treetops of the Esterházypark. The former flak tower from the Second World War is one of the most striking buildings in the city. Today it is one of the most unusual zoos in Europe.
Since 1957, the House of the Sea has been housed here, and in 2020 the tower got a glass extension. Where cannons used to be, sharks and rays now swim, and over 10,000 animals live on eleven floors, from turtles to snakes to monkeys and bats. From the viewing terrace at the top you have a wide view over Vienna.
