Deep ditch where once a creek flowed through the city

Anyone who walks along the Wipplingerstraße in the city centre suddenly crosses a bridge, in the middle of the city and without water. Among them is the Deep Trench, a road that runs much deeper than its surroundings. Here a creek once flowed through a natural depression, and in Roman times it formed the border of the legionary camp Vindobona. Where the High Bridge stands today, there was then a gate tower of the camp.

In the Middle Ages, the water was diverted, and at the Deep Trench settled craftsmen who needed a lot of water, such as Gerber. The streams around the center later disappeared completely underground. The Ottakringer Bach was completely arched between 1837 and 1840 and flows today in the canal under the city. Today's Hohe Brücke was built in 1903 and 1904 in Art Nouveau, via stairs you come down into the trench from above. Incidentally, Mozart lived here in the summer of 1773, and Beethoven also lived for a time at the Deep Trench.
