Funeral Museum, Death in Vienna

Funeral Museum, Death in Vienna

The Viennese have a very special relationship to death, one likes to speak of a “shen corpse”. How seriously the city takes this, shows a museum, which fittingly lies underground. Since 2014, the funeral museum has been located under the facility hall 2 at the Central Cemetery.

On about 300 square meters, it shows more than 250 original objects from the history of the Viennese funeral. There is a hearse for horses from around 1900, and there is a folding coffin from 1784. Joseph II wanted to save. At the grave the floor opened, the dead man fell in, and the coffin was reused. The Viennese were so outraged that the Emperor had to take back the rule after six months. The most eerie are a heart stalker and a rescuer. They come from a time when people were very afraid to be buried alive.
