Vienna City Hall, eating under the mayor

Vienna City Hall, eating under the mayor

Above the town hall square, the town hall tower rises into the sky, but part of the town hall lies underground. On the corner to Feldstraße, a separate exit leads down to the Town Hall cellar, which was opened on 12 February 1899. Since then, it has been a meeting place for Viennese wine and traditional cuisine. The rooms cover over 3,500 square meters and are listed as monuments.

The artistic equipment comes from the architect Joseph Urban, the historical murals by Heinrich Lefler. In the Rittersaal you can see representations of large festivals from Viennese history, in the Augustinerstüberl scenes from Viennese legends, and in the Grinzinger Keller stands a wine barrel with 70,000 liters. The cellar was recently renovated in 2025. In the restaurant you can eat lunch and dinner, and those who sit down here eat directly under the seat of the mayor and municipal council.
