Almost 2,000 years ago, where today the High Market is located, the houses of a Roman legion camp stood. Vindobona was at that time an important post on the Danube border of the Roman Empire, and at the time of flowering lived in camps and settlements about 30,000 people from all parts of the empire.
In the Römermuseum you can descend below today’s street level and suddenly stand in the remains of two officers’ houses, Vienna’s most important Roman excavation. Over three floors, everyday objects, inscriptions, reconstructions and animations tell how soldiers and their families lived here. Anyone who then walks across the city center sees it with different eyes, because under many alleys there are still traces of Roman Vienna.
